Tales from a NICU Journal, week three of thirteen.
16th July, 2024 - Tales from a NICU Journal
The past few days have been a whirlwind, but we’re grateful for the small victories. Benjamin is awake and stable, and we’ve finally been able to have some precious cuddles since he came out of sedation. It’s moments like these that remind us how far we’ve come.
Tackling Challenges, One Step at a Time
Benjamin has developed a little infection, so he’s on antibiotics. His breathing is also getting some support as an X-ray revealed a minor issue with his right lung. Thankfully, the doctors are optimistic, believing that time and medication will help him recover.
Until his breathing improves, they won’t proceed with the contrast X-ray to check if the surgical repair of his oesophagus was successful. It’s a bit of a waiting game now, but that’s okay. We’re learning to embrace Benjamin’s pace, knowing that each step forward will come when he’s ready.
A Small Yet Comforting Milestone
One of the best feelings lately is knowing Benjamin is finally getting my breast milk, even if it’s through a feeding tube. It’s a comfort to know he’s being nourished. The nurses have been incredible, teaching us how to give him his feeds and involving us in his care. From changing his nappies to bringing muslins from home to personalise his cot, every little task helps us feel closer to him.
Speaking of his cot, the lid of his incubator is off, so it now feels like a regular cot. Seeing him in a more open environment makes everything feel a little more normal.
A Home Away From Home
We’ve been lucky to have a room at Ronald McDonald House, which is just a stone’s throw from the hospital. This incredible charity provides free accommodations for families, and we’re beyond grateful. It’s been my base most nights, while Ed and Esme balance time between home and Manchester.
Esme, our little ray of sunshine, has been loving it. To her, it’s like staying in a hotel. The playroom there, with its fantastic toys, has kept her entertained and happy.
Grateful for the Little Things
While we’re eager to see more progress, we’re reminded daily to cherish these small, meaningful moments. Each cuddle, each step in Benjamin’s care, and every smile from Esme remind us that we’re moving forward—slowly but surely.
For now, we’ll keep taking things one day at a time, trusting in Benjamin’s strength and the incredible care he’s receiving.
